Tata Sierra Diesel AT: 1 Week Quick Impressions | Pros, Cons & Verdict

We spent a week with the Tata Sierra Diesel Automatic to evaluate its real-world mileage, comfort, performance and practicality. Here are our key takeaways, including what we liked, what could be better and who should consider buying it.

Key Highlights

  • The Sierra offers best-in-class second-row space, well-designed seats, headroom and glass area. Ooze good factor inside the cabin. Bench type seat layout easily accommodate 3 adults.
  • From every angle, the Sierra looks Big, butch, eye-catching and looks stunning imho. Boxy ‘unique’ design sometimes may look quirky but this grows on you. Looks the best without accessories.
  • Linear performance from 1.5 Kryojet Diesel Engine with 280 nm torque, best for relaxed driving, smooth 6-speed TC Automatic and if you need punch, prefer driving in Sports mode or with paddle shifters.
  • Despite its size, the Suspension and dynamics are sorted for a boxy and big car like this. That’s its biggest strength with a light steering. It’s easy to drive, But above 100, Duster, Kushaq and Taigun have better control, thanks to lesser height and smaller size.

  • During our test, the Sierra returned me 16 kmpl mostly in City traffic and 21 kmpl on mixed routes. I have shared it on Twitter as a post already.
  • Standard safety & convenience features kit is excellent. Overall build & paint feels top grade. Nothing to complain. This is the best passenger car made by Tata ever.
  • Features such as the 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, Dolby Atmos audio, clear, bright & mature fonts on cockpit, rain sensing wipers, under engine guard and auto LED headlights were thoroughly helpful. Light on doors, glovebox and boot is highly appreciated.

Shortcomings and Niggles noticed

  • Top variant enters in the dangerous territory of 7XO and Harrier and that gives customer different advantages along with power.
  • Some bits in the interior like loose power windows joystick, improper backlit of icons on the right side of driver, left stalk touching paddle shifter when you pull up for fluid … so we still have that room to reach perfection. Outer panel gaps are mostly consistent.
  • Performance is linear and not outright. If you want that quick overtake, prefer a downshift with paddle shifter or Sports mode. NVH levels better than Nexon but above 1500 rpm, engine clatter is audible. Should not be a problem for car lovers.
  • B-pillar is thick so takes some practice without 360-degree camera and blind-spot monitoring. Overall glass area is excellent and cabin is very roomy.
  • My media car had screen restart glitch once, panoramic sunroof was not opening and key had to press hard to lock/unlock. These media cars are highly abused sometimes so it can be a specific issue with this car.
