PDI Checklist for New Car Delivery in India (Dealers Don’t Want You to See This)

A buyer in Gurugram took delivery of a new Creta. Looked perfect. Three weeks later — paint bubbling near the B-pillar. Dealer said: "Sir, yeh toh outside damage hai." No PDI on record. No proof. Case closed. Don't be that buyer.

PDI — Pre-Delivery Inspection — is the one step between paying for your new car and actually owning a problem-free one. It costs you 30 minutes. Skipping it can cost you thousands.

Dealers rarely encourage it. Some actively rush you past it. There's a reason for that.

This guide gives you the full PDI checklist — what to check, where to look, and what to do if your dealer pushes back.

What is PDI and Why Dealers Rush It

PDI stands for Pre-Delivery Inspection. It's your right to inspect the car thoroughly before accepting delivery and signing the delivery receipt.

Before a car reaches your hands, it travels from factory to stockyard to dealer lot. That's often weeks — sometimes months. During that time:

  • Paint can get scratched or chipped in transit
  • Battery can drain from sitting idle
  • Rodents can chew through wiring in storage lots
  • Accessories can go missing
  • Demo usage can add undisclosed kilometres

Dealers rush PDI because a thorough inspection slows the delivery process and — more importantly — creates documented proof if something is wrong. No PDI record means no paper trail. No paper trail means no warranty claim leverage for you.

Before You Go: What to Bring

  • Your invoice copy (to cross-verify accessories, colour, variant)
  • A phone fully charged — for photos and video
  • A torch or flashlight — for checking under seats, door jambs, boot edges
  • This checklist — printed or on your phone
  • Time — block at least 60 minutes. Don't go hungry or in a rush.

Exterior PDI Checklist

Do this outside, in natural daylight. Showroom lighting hides paint defects by design.

Paint and Body

  • Walk around the full car slowly — look for swirl marks, scratches, dents
  • Check the roof — dealers rarely expect you to look there
  • Inspect paint near the door edges and boot lip — chips are common from transit
  • Look for uneven paint texture — could indicate repainted panels (accident history)
  • Check for colour mismatch between panels in sunlight

Panel Gaps and Alignment

  • All panel gaps (bonnet, doors, boot) should be even on both sides
  • Uneven gaps indicate either poor assembly or accident repair
  • Open and close every door — should feel solid, no grinding or resistance

Glass and Rubber

  • Check all glass for chips, cracks, or distortion
  • Windshield distortion check: look through it at a straight line (building edge, horizon)
  • Door rubbers and weather strips — should sit flush with no gaps
  • Check the sunroof seal if applicable

Tyres and Wheels

  • All four tyres should be the same brand, size, and DOT date (manufacture date)
  • DOT date is stamped on the sidewall — format WWZZ (week/year). Avoid tyres older than 6 months
  • Check tyre pressure — should match manufacturer spec, not under-inflated
  • Check alloy wheels for kerb damage or scratches
  • Verify spare tyre presence and condition

Interior PDI Checklist

Trim and Fit

  • Press every panel, trim piece, and A/B/C pillar cover — no rattles or loose clips
  • Check seat upholstery for cuts, stains, or discolouration
  • Sunroof: open and close fully, check for smooth operation and no leaks
  • Check all floor mats are present and are the correct fit for your variant

Electronics and Controls

  • Test every power window — all four, up and down
  • Test all door lock buttons — driver side, passenger side, and rear
  • Check every AC vent — cool air from all, no musty smell
  • Test all speakers individually — use the balance/fade setting
  • Connect your phone via Bluetooth and CarPlay/Android Auto if applicable
  • Test every USB port and charging point
  • Verify all warning lights clear after engine start
  • Check headlights, taillights, fog lights, hazard lights, brake lights
  • Test horn
  • Check reverse camera (if equipped) — image should be clear, guidelines visible

Odometer and Instruments

  • Odometer should read under 50 km — ideally under 10 km
  • 50–200 km is a yellow flag — ask the dealer for explanation
  • 200+ km: this car has been used. You are entitled to refuse or negotiate
  • Check fuel level — full tank is not standard but note what it reads

Under the Hood — Basic Checks

You don't need to be a mechanic. You just need to look.

  • Engine bay should be clean — no oil leaks, no grease buildup, no loose cables
  • Check all fluid levels: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid
  • Battery terminals should be clean — no white corrosion
  • Check the battery manufacturing date (sticker on battery)
  • Start the engine — listen for any unusual noise. Let it idle for 2–3 minutes

Documents to Verify Before Signing

Do not sign the delivery receipt until you have verified all of the following:

  • Chassis number on the car matches the invoice and RC form
  • Engine number matches
  • Colour code matches your order
  • Variant (trim level) matches your order
  • All accessories listed in invoice are physically present in the car
  • Warranty card is stamped with today's date — not a future date, not blank
  • Service booklet is present and unstamped (first service not yet done)
  • Owner's manual is present — correct language/model edition
  • Two sets of keys are present
  • HSRP (High Security Registration Plate) status — check what your state requires

Important: The warranty period starts from the delivery date. Make sure the date on your warranty card is correct. Some dealers backdate or leave it blank — both are problems.

What To Do If the Dealer Refuses PDI

It happens. Here's how to handle it without losing your cool or your leverage

  • Step 1: Stay calm, document the refusal. If a staff member tells you PDI is not possible or not allowed, note their name and ask for it in writing.
  • Step 2: Escalate to the service manager or dealer principal. Most refusals come from the sales floor. Management is usually more reasonable when confronted professionally.
  • Step 3: Delay the delivery. You are under no obligation to sign the delivery receipt the same day. Tell them you will return when PDI is possible.
  • Step 4: Contact the manufacturer directly. Every OEM has a customer care number and escalation process. Mention that the dealer is restricting PDI before delivery.
  • Step 5: File a complaint. Consumer Protection Act gives you grounds if a dealer delivers a defective vehicle without allowing inspection. Document everything.

In most cases, the threat of escalation is enough. Dealers know PDI is your right. They just bank on buyers not knowing it.

Strong Consumer Angle

Dealers do PDI every day. Most buyers do it once in their life.

Final Word

The showroom is designed to make you feel celebratory. Mithai, photos, garlands. That feeling is engineered to lower your attention.

30 minutes of inspection protects a purchase you spent months planning and lakhs earning. Don't skip it.

Found an issue during PDI? Don't accept delivery. Request rectification in writing before you sign anything. A dealer who resists is a dealer who knows something is wrong.
