Maruti Brezza CNG to be launched soon

Maruti Suzuki is planning to expand its CNG lineup to include SUVs after launching CNG versions of the Baleno and XL6.

In addition to the Grand Vitara, Maruti will introduce CNG technology in the Brezza SUV. The current generation sub-compact SUV will be the first in its segment to be supplied with a CNG variant in addition to the conventional petrol engine powered basic models. The new generation Brezza, which competes with the Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue among others, was launched earlier this year with a starting price of 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

According to leaked information, Maruti Suzuki would offer CNG powertrain in all currently available Brezza models, a first among all CNG cars marketed in India. This includes the new generation Brezza LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+ models. Another first would be for Maruti to offer CNG with automatic transmission options.

In terms of design, the Brezza CNG will not undergo significant changes. The only significant difference will be in the bootspace, where the CNG kit will be installed, decreasing the SUV's luggage capacity. It will continue to be powered by the 1.5-litre new K Series petrol engine, which produces roughly 100 horsepower and 136 Nm of peak torque. The performance output in CNG mode is projected to be slightly lower. However, fuel efficiency is likely to increase over its petrol-mode mileage. The Brezza CNG may achieve an efficiency of roughly 30 km per kg.

Details on the CNG kit will be revealed when Maruti Suzuki officially unveils the SUV in the coming days. It is expected to receive a CNG kit with a capacity of roughly 60 litres comparable to that used for the Ertiga or XL6.

The Maruti Brezza CNG models are expected to start at just under 9 lakh. When it is released, it is intended to be the most cheap CNG SUV on the market. As of now, it is unlikely to have any direct competitors in its segment. It will, however, not be the first SUV in India to receive CNG versions. Toyota has already confirmed the release of the Urban Cruiser HyRyer with CNG kit, which will be joined by its technological cousin, the Maruti Grand Vitara SUV, in the near future.
