We Drove 3 Mahindra EVs to Pathankot and Back in 40°C Heat. Here's the Real Range.
Brochure range figures are easy. Real range in an Indian summer, with the AC fighting for its life, is the number that actually matters.
So we took all three Mahindra born-electric SUVs — the BE 6, XEV 9e, and 9S — in top trim, each with the same 79 kWh battery, charged to 100%, with equal tyre pressure, and sent them on the same Ludhiana → Pathankot → Ludhiana run. No charging allowed in between. Highway, traffic, hot tarmac, AC on throughout.
Here's what 362 km of real driving told us.

The Setup

Real conditions: ~40°C heat, highway + city traffic, continuous AC
Planned ~400 km; actual driven distance landed at 362 km after a route change
Same battery, but three different buyers in mind. So this was never just about the final percentage — it was about efficiency, comfort, and how each car behaves over a long, punishing day.

The First 54 km: Numbers Start to Separate
- XEV 9e — 89%
- BE 6 — 88%
- 9S — 86%
Important context: the XEV 9e was run in a mix of Range and Default mode with L1 regen, while the other two stayed mostly in Default with L0. That alone explains part of the gap — and it's exactly why two people can drive the same EV and get very different range. Mode, regen, speed, heat, and traffic all move the needle.

Why Heat Quietly Eats Your Range
At 40°C, battery energy isn't just moving the car. A big chunk goes into battery conditioning — keeping the pack cool — before you add a hard-working AC on top.
The data made this obvious. During the hottest stretch, conditioning load was around 20%. By the cooler evening it dropped to about 6.7%. The result showed up instantly in efficiency:
Hot afternoon: ~5 to 5.5 km/kWh
Cooler evening: above 7 km/kWh
Same route, same car, same driver — range shifts dramatically with temperature and timing. That's the part brochures never tell you.
How They Felt Over Distance
XEV 9e drove like a proper premium SUV — planted at 80–100 km/h, low NVH, airy cabin, and that relaxed feel where you don't arrive tired. Mahindra's skateboard platform with centrally placed battery mass and blade-cell packaging clearly helps both dynamics and thermal efficiency.
BE 6 punched above expectations. Strong, confident power delivery, genuinely comfortable seats, and a 360-degree camera that turns from "parking gimmick" into a real stress-reducer over a long route.
On the return leg, the XEV 9e ran mostly in Range mode — and still pulled clean overtakes and held just past 80 km/h with a light foot. A range mode is only useful if it doesn't make the car miserable. This one didn't.

The Ground Clearance Worry Nobody Talks About
One smart point came up that has nothing to do with efficiency: if the underbody scrapes, what happens to the battery and its warranty?
On the 9S, running-board clearance is around 205 mm, but Mahindra has built in roughly 17 mm of extra buffer for the pack — taking battery-area clearance to about 222 mm — plus reinforced protective material underneath. It won't beat a boulder, but it meaningfully reduces the everyday belly-scrape anxiety (and the messy warranty-vs-insurance disputes that follow).
The 30% Highway Rule
Practical takeaway: on highways, keep a 30% buffer. Even when the math says you'll make it, traffic, heat, diversions, and charger availability can flip the outcome. And if you do dip low, the car's power-saving mode stretches things further. The goal isn't to panic at 30% — it's to plan without stress.
What It Actually Costs to Run
Home (AC) charging:
- 11 kW charger: full charge in ~8 hours
- 7.2 kW charger: ~10–12 hours
- A full cycle uses ~80–82 units → about ₹820 per full charge
- Real-world translation: ~430–470 km in mixed traffic
Public DC fast charging:
- Supports up to 180 kW (common chargers are 60–120 kW)
- 0 to 80% in ~25 minutes in good conditions
- Rates of ₹16–₹25 per unit → roughly ₹1,500–₹2,500 per session
Bottom line: home charging is where EV ownership genuinely pays off. Public charging buys you freedom on highways, not savings.

The Final Result After 362 km
Back in Ludhiana, in the dark, after a brutal day:
- XEV 9e: 24% left, ~145 km indicated
- BE 6: 24% left, ~123 km indicated
- 9S: 19% left, ~92 km indicated
The XEV 9e and BE 6 finished strongest, both at 24%; the 9S landed at 19%. But percentages alone don't crown a winner — mode, regen, and driver inputs all shaped those numbers. The honest read: all three are capable long-distance machines when driven sensibly.
So, Does the 500 km Claim Hold Up?
Extrapolating from this run, draining the pack fully would land you around 460–480 km in these tough conditions. That makes the claimed ~500 km believable — not as a perfect-lab number, but as something you can realistically approach with a lighter foot and friendlier weather.
Simple answer: in 40°C heat with the AC blasting on real roads, you're looking at the mid-400 km zone. In gentler conditions, the 500 km figure is well within reach.
For anyone shopping for a highway-capable EV with strong performance, a big battery, and trustworthy real-world range, this 362 km run makes a solid case. These aren't half-hearted electrification exercises — they're serious products.
