January 2025 Car Sales Analysis: Winners, Losers & Market Trends

Total Sales: 4.02 Lakh Units

January 2025 was a strong month for the Indian automobile industry, largely driven by heavy discounts on leftover 2024 models. The industry showed resilience amid competition from new entrants, EV transitions, and shifting buyer preferences. Let’s break down how each brand performed.

Market Leaders

Maruti Suzuki – 1.73 Lakh Units ✅
  • Discounts on most 2024-manufactured cars, but none for Ertiga and Dzire.
  • Maruti needs to standardize six airbags in the Baleno, Ertiga, and Brezza.
  • Baleno should get a proper CVT like i20 & Altroz instead of an AMT.
  • The Grand Vitara alone is not enough to fight against Indian rivals in the C2/D-segment.
Hyundai – 54,003 Units ✅
  • Discounts on Venue, i20 & Verna to clear stock.
  • Creta & Venue continue to perform, but Hyundai’s market share is shrinking.
  • No proper D-segment SUV like XUV700/Scorpio-N, which is a big gap in its lineup.
  • Alcazar is just an extended Creta, and Tucson remains expensive (CKD tax).
Mahindra – 50,659 Units ✅
  • Massive growth from 15K in 2019 to 50K+ in 2025!
  • XUV700, Thar Roxx & Scorpio-N dominate in urban & rural markets.
  • Discounts reported on XUV3XO, but Bolero remains strong without discounts.
  • Born EVs will be crucial, and Bolero Neo’s structure should be improved.
  • Six airbags should be standard across the lineup.
Tata – 48,076 Units ✅
  • Punch EV leads EV sales, but heavy discounts are reported.
  • MG Windsor is eating into Tata’s EV market share.
  • Nexon & Punch are strong due to VFM and multiple engine options.
  • Punch should have 6 airbags, Nexon & Altroz need GDi engines, and Harrier/Safari need a petrol option ASAP.
  • Sierra will challenge Thar Roxx in the lifestyle SUV space.
Toyota – 26,178 Units ✅
  • Some discounts on Hyryder, but none on Innova, Hycross & Fortuner.
  • Taisor & Glanza exist to keep dealers happy, but Toyota has no original offering under ₹18L.
KIA – 25,025 Units ✅
  • Strong comeback post December 2024 slump.
  • Seltos, Sonet & Carens continue to perform well.
  • Syros launch will decide if it cannibalizes Sonet or expands market share.
  • Hyundai-Kia have smartly grown their market share together—VW-Skoda should take notes!

Mid-Segment Players

Honda – 7,325 Units ✅
  • Decent numbers despite no turbo-petrol, diesel, 6-seater, or sub-4m SUV.
  • Amaze 3rd-gen is a solid sub-₹12L sedan.
  • City & Elevate still strong with NA engines.
  • Heavy discounts on 2nd-gen Amaze reported.
MG – 4,455 Units ✅
  • Windsor is in high demand with no discounts.
  • MG should focus on EVs with better VFM offerings.
  • Hector is losing appeal due to its weak petrol engine & odd design.
Skoda – 4,133 Units ✅
  • Strong buzz for Kyliaq, deliveries started.
  • Kushaq selling at heavy discounts.
  • Needs more NA engine options & a wider portfolio to scale up.
Volkswagen – 3,344 Units ✅
  • Virtus is carrying VW, while Taigun needs an urgent refresh.
  • Taigun's leftover stock is being cleared with discounts.
  • VW needs a sub-4m SUV & a 6-seater under ₹25L for long-term success.
  • Golf coming as a halo model, but it won’t move the needle.

Struggling Brands

Renault – 2,780 Units ⚠️
  • New-gen Duster is a must!
  • Mid-size crossover segment is getting stale, Renault must shake things up.
  • Kiger still lacks 6 airbags.
Nissan – 2,404 Units ✅
  • Magnite is as consistent as Dhoni’s 35-run innings!
  • 6 airbags standard from ₹5.99L, turbo + proper CVT.
  • Needs a bigger portfolio to survive.
Citroën – 470 Units ⚠️
  • No clue why their small cars aren't selling at least 1,000 units.
  • C3 is decent but suffers from poor brand awareness, dealership reach & missing features.
Jeep – 310 Units ⚠️
  • Compass isn’t even crossing 1K units.
  • No petrol option, high pricing & weak after-sales hurting the brand.
  • Needs new models ASAP before trust erodes further.

Final Thoughts

  • Winners: Maruti, Mahindra, Tata, Hyundai, KIA, Toyota.
  • Struggling: Renault, Citroën, Jeep.
  • On the Edge: Skoda, VW, Nissan, MG, Honda.
  • 2025 Outlook: Brands need to focus on safety (6 airbags), fresh designs, better powertrain options (GDi petrol, CVTs, turbo-petrol), and stronger EV lineups to stay competitive.
